Easter Egg Blowing and Painting

After having a discussion with Room 12 today, we realised that most people in our class have never blown and painted eggs! Therefore...

Next Monday - please send your child along with an uncooked egg (or two or three if you think they may break it) We will blow the egg white and yolk out on Monday afternoon.

Tuesday - please send your child along with a few cotton buds to paint with.

Our room will stink! We will have fun!!

We hope you look forward to your child's creations coming home next week.

Sounds

See if you can guess where each poet is...

Braeden
The wind crashes in my face
Waves calmly push against my boat
Seagulls squawk looking for food.

Voices on the wind
Calling to me
Wanting me to go back to shore.

Waves tapping on rocks
Trying to tell them something
Trying to help.

Seagulls picking up fish
And throwing them up and catching them again.

The sea talking.

Fritha
Waves splashing against rocks
Burying them under sand
Howling out at sea.

Seagulls squawking and circling above me
Looking for food
They swoop down and grab fish
And toss them, throw them and tease them.

Wind shrieking and whistling for all to hear
As it floats away from you
It makes a calm noise
As if it's sad.

Sand being dug up and piled
People throwing it and the wind carrying it into the sky
As everyone gets blinded
And hears the calm noise of silence.

Isaiah
Seagulls squawking
Running away
As they take off
On their long journey.

Waves crash against rocks
Grinding them down
Into pebbles
That turn into grains of sand.

Laughter of children
As they play
Swimming
And building sandcastles.

A tough, ripping wind
Tries to pull you off the ground
A tug of war
That the wind wins.

Precious Sounds
Isabella

Fire reaches out
Trying to touch me
With burning fingers
Slowly fading away.

Trees waving side to side
Trying to tug their feet
Out of the ground.

Rivers raging
Along the stony path
With glistening sparkles
In the moonlight.

Cold Sounds
Ruairi

Crunching of the hard dry cover
Under my feet
Echoing off a nearby house
Attacking my nerves.

Wind grinding, breaking apart an innocent rock
Tricking the leaves off their branches
And creaming through holes in a tree.

Sliding off the sledges, rocketing down and away
Screeching of brakes in the far off distance
As the snow gets wetter in the midday sun.

Sound of the Storm
Ngaire

Waves crash
Clenching the rocks
Holding on tight
Strong and fierce.

The seagull screams
Filled with frustration
As her prey darts away
Just in time
Like a silver arrow.

The shrieks and yells
Of the angry wind
Echoing off the sharp high cliffs
She calls one more time
And is silent again.

Pleasant Sounds
Maia

Waves splashing against the rocks
And waving through my toes.

Seagulls flapping their wings
Across the bright blue sky
As they are searching for food.

The wind howls in my ear
And pulls me to the ocean
And the sharp grey rocks.

Unpleasant Sounds
 Louie

Explorers smacking their parched, dry lips
Delusional moaning and the tearing of weathered coats.

The soft whisper of wind
As it skims across the dunes
Lightly brushing the crumpling peaks.

Harsh, unforgiving spines
Scratching weary skin away
For blood to seep to the surface.

The whimper of the sky
As clouds threaten to give way.

The screeches and cackles of vultures
Circling, closing in
On their struggling victims.

The Sounds of the Coral Reef
Paige

Stones jingle in my hands
Weed stretches out
And flows with the current
Fish nip by
Their tails flapping furiously.

Seashells work their way over rocks
Limpits cling on with all their might
Whales gulping down crill
Small fish feed on an open mussel.

Dolphins diving on the surface
Wanting their children
Communicating by calling
All the fish making their sounds
Of the coral reef.

Poppy Challenge

Mrs Dempster of Room 4 is organising a poppy challenge to commemorate Anzac Day. As many children as possible are asked to create a poppy of approximately hand size, made out of any material, to be part of a wreath taken to the dawn service on behalf of St Martins School.

Please complete your creations by Wednesday April 16th and drop them off to Room 4.

With thanks.

Water Safety

Today's session was such an important one, and all our R12 children had a BLAST!!!

They were split into two groups to do huddling and raft safety. We saw co-operation, listening skills and clear instructions all in action. They were voted the two best behaved and best listening classes of the day. Well done Team! Check out the photos below to see who you can spot learning about safety in the water.

Patiently waiting...

Ruby had to pull on the jacket while Braeden grabbed each person's leg.

Maia and Nguts' first time in the deep pool! Congratulations.

Awesome team support.

Swimming instructor's revenge!

Amelia flips in.

Huddle for warmth.

Adam organising his team.

Guess who?! Mr Boyd in action!

Reminders

Dear Families,

Today is the final day of swimming technique coaching.

Wednesday and Thursday will be water safety. On Friday the children need to bring winter weight PJs as well as their togs.
I am amazed how much the children have improved with this intensive swimming coaching. For example, Sophie began last week swimming a few strokes of freestyle without breathing. Now she can swim a whole length doing fantastic freestyle and breathing smoothly like a champion!!

On another note, thank you to those families who have already checked their children's hair for headlice. I know this is a frustrating ongoing problem, and I appreciate your support.

Hagley Sport
Yesterday our first sports notice came home asking for parent assistance with our sports teams, and for children to select a sport they may wish to trial for. Parent coaching is crucial to enabling our winter sport programme to go ahead. Please put your name forward if possible.

With thanks, Ms Saxon.
