Continuum of Opinions

This morning we looked at an article on Stuff about a Year 11 student in the North Island who has been suspended from his school because he didn't follow the rule of boys not having long hair.

After reading the article and discussing it, we had to stand on a continuum from strongly agree to strongly disagree and then justify our reason for standing where we had chosen to stand. It really got R12 thinking!

Jake strongly agreed that he should have been stood down because the rule had been set by the school and he had been aware of it and chose to break it. Ruby felt strongly that he should not have been stood down because he should have had the right to wear his own hair in the way that he chooses. She thought that boys and girls should have equal rights.

It was great to hear the children expressing really strong and differing opinions very clearly, and being respected by the others in our class. We had a discussion around rules at school and at home which was also interesting.

What do you think?
