Science Alive Electricity

This afternoon from 1-3 we had John from Science Alive introducing our inquiry topic of electricity.

First of all we thought about all the things we used this morning that required electricity. Imagine getting up in the dark, having a cold shower, and having no toast or hot drink for breakfast!

We know that power stations generate our electricity. Usually for us this is hydroelectricity, from water.

Ruairi was quite an expert about types of electricity!
Adam, Louis and Ruby provided energy to power a lightbulb.

Findlay was offered a job at Science Alive as he has so much wonderful knowledge!! We may lose our amazing Findlay before the end of the year!
We all then got to build electrical circuits - how exciting!!

Sophie and Amelia

Findlay and Adam

Louis and Kyan

Bonni and Braeden

Fritha and Ngaire

Ruby and Jaden

We heard words like circuit, battery, magnet, protons, electrons, neutrons, energy, power source, unbroken pathway, component, switch, series, parallel, mercury (the only metal that is a liquid at room temperature), light emitting diode (LED), insulator, conductor, light, heat, sound, movement. There is so much great scientific language to talk about, we are building our vocabulary so broadly.

R12's circuit!

It was so great to see EVERYONE in R12 fully involved in the learning this afternoon. We had our 'experts' like Findlay, Adam, Ruairi and Louie, but we also had other people who were a little unsure and reluctant at the beginning who came so far in such a short time.
Congratulations Team! And a huge thank you to John from Science Alive.
