Monday Poetry

Last week Room 12 were challenged to write 'rhyming couplets' in their poems - it was a total disaster!!! We are glad Ms Saxon doesn't usually let us rhyme!

Today we had three challenges:
1. To write about something, but really about something else.
2. To be someone else.
3. To include our senses.

Read on to see how we did...

Inside
Conal

A salty ripple spreads
Welcomed by others
His reflection looms above him.

Staring across the barron land
His hope betrays him
Rubble pierces his feet
While thunder roars.

His fear filled heart gives in
Anger from inside takes over
His taste of life dies.

A fury - filled wind
Knocks him down
His scream of pain
Silences his mind.

The Puddle
Sam C

A puddle of despair
Clinches all the joy
In a battle of emotions.

Alone in the barren desert
The boy walks free
But his feelings trap him, they cage him
He cannot escape them.

The hot sand burns beneath his feet
A tangy taste of salt on the air
Firey depression invades his mind
The puddle swallows his up.

Storm
Catherine

As he looked down at his reflection
A salty drip trickles down his cheek.

The puddle expands from threatening clouds
He smells the tar from the broken roads
The shingle pricks his feet.

As he stands alone
Depressions mocks him
An empty feeling shoots his heart
A gust of wind send shivers up his spine.

As he walks alone
A ray of sun shoots through the angry clouds
He looks up, everything changes
The empty feeling fades.

He dreams of forest and chirping birds
A little boy says, "Will you be my friend>"
"Yes", he replies.

The Puddle
Tuhuru

A boy
Sitting on a bench
Staring at a puddle
From his eyes.

He stands by the puddle
Looking into his mind
He sees sadness and darkness.

He feels the coldness
Under his feet
He can smell rotten ground.

Mirror Mirror
Evelyn

Staring across the barren land
A battered hand reaches out
A lonely eye rapidly searching for something, but nothing.

Shattered glass spiralled along a soggy ground
Crumbling buildings loom over him
He stares through the old mirror wall.

Children running, playing
Trees swaying in the cool breeze
But on the other side.

He calls to them but they don't hear him
They don't see him
A shiver of sadness grasps his mind.

No one cares.

He runs
Feet bashing the moaning lumps of rotting ground
Pounding like a beating heart.

Nowhere, no one, nothing.

Tears
Baxter

Tears of sadness
Builds puddles to rivers
His eyes streaming
Tears of pain.

The empty and loneliest cloud
Covers his sadness.

A flicker of light
Through the mist of rivers
That flow in him
He tries to escape the silence.

I love that the poets of Room 12 can show empathy by putting themselves in someone else's shoes to write such powerful poems.

  3. Whoa Max, you just suddenly appeared out of the blue!
I really felt something in these amazing poems! It felt painful yet delicate and would crumple at even a slight touch!
