All electricity generators require something to make them go, this is called a generator. This generator goes around and uses magnetism to generate electricity. These 'drivers' are wind, sun, water, nuclear, geothermal.
The blades on the wind turbines are massive - some as long as 100m in diameter! The ones on Gebbies Pass are 32m. A generator needs to go fast to spin the blades, with the edges of the blades travelling at around 330km/hr!! Wouldn't want to be hit by one...
On a wind turbine there is a blade, a rotor, a hydraulic system, a tower, gearbox and generator.
Really big ones are being built so that they can go into the sea and generate electricity from the higher winds there. They would need really strong concrete to hold them into the seabed.
Pete uses his IPad to remotely control the turbines!
The blades are fibreglass and most of the rest of it is made of steel. There is a ladder inside the centre of the tower so people can climb up inside it to set it up.
