Brain Boxes

This week we are having a blast discovering, experimenting, discussing, hypothesising and learning while we play with the brain boxes from Science Alive. It is wonderful to see the cooperative learning that is happening in Room 12.
Keep it up Team!

Emily, Fritha and Ngaire showing real teamwork to try to make their Brainbox work.

Finn, Ruairi and Louis had a high-flying fan.

Nguts and Allan worked really well together to make scientific discoveries.

Kyan, Jake and Findlay brought brains to their box!

Jaden, Jayden and Braeden got their fan to work.

Ruby, Amelia and Sophie were dancing away to their radio once they got it connected.

Elizabeth, Maia and Paige setting up their connections.

Ravenous Readers

So many people in our class are really challenging themselves with our Ravenous Reader Awards. Many are reading books they never would have previously considered. It is so exciting to see as a teacher, you would not believe how much some people have improved their reading!!

These people have already earned a bronze award:
  • Elizabeth
  • Emily
  • Ruairi
  • Finn
  • Braeden
  • Isaiah
  • Sophie
  • Paige
  • Ruby
  • Amelia
  • Chloe
  • Louie
And these super readers have already earned a silver:
  •  Finn
  • Braeden
  • Paige
  • Amelia
  • Louie
The race is now on to be the first to receive a gold award from R12!! At the start of the year we talked about how amazing it would be if every single person in our class earned at least a bronze award...

A cool website that may help us with the great question of what to read next is:

Not Only

We were trying to use personification in our writing today.

Isabella

Not only the mist blanketing the land
Not only the river stampeding down the stream
Not only the sun breaking its way out of the sea with power
Not only the birds singing their dawn chorus
Not only a rainbow stretching towards tomorrow
Not only these things.

Emily

Not only a storm making its way angrily across the sky
Not only a rainbow showing off its beautiful colours
Not only the snow making a white blanket covering the land
Not only the sun coming out of its habitat and lighting up the day
Not only the wind shouting a message to me
Not only these things.

Nguts

Not only the trees stretching their limbs
No
Not only the eels zig zagging through the water
No
Not only the whales splashing over to see the tourists
No
Not only the seals lazing on the rocks
No
Not only these things.

Fritha

Not only the sea calling for help
Not only a snowflake shimmering in the warm sun
Not only the sound of the grass swaying its hands.

Not only a bird singing the dawn chorus
Not only a cloud blanketing the sky
Not only lightning roaring at the earth.

Not only leaves shivering in the breeze
Not only the sun spying on the earth
Not only the warm feeling of a fire crackling with happiness.

Braeden

Not only birds winging their morning song
Not only hail hitting the ground
Not only rivers flowing fast
Not only a spiders web with raindrops on it
Not only bonfires with smoke coming out
Not only seals laying on the rocks.

Ruairi

Not only the leaves rustling in fear
Not only the bird chirping the morning chorus
Not only the rushing river catching the sun's rays
Not only the sound of the trees limbs stretching.

Not only the bee extracting pollen from the flower
Not only the cliffs eroding away
Not only the sound of leaves flapping in the wind
Not only these things.

Not only the eagle's wings shimmering in the sun
Not only the leaves shivering in the soft breeze
Not only the trees limbs stretching into the beyond.

Thank You!

A huge thank you to the families who have already attended our reporting conferences. These are such an important part of our communication and crucial to supporting your children in their learning. It was wonderful to hear the children confidently sharing their improvements and to get such honest and positive feedback from families.

I look forward to seeing more of you this evening.

Thank you once again.

Tamara Saxon.

Our Potentials

The Moment
Elizabeth

To write down all I contain at this moment
I would capture the sea
With all my might
It would take me wherever I wanted
To the highest mountain,
Or the deepest ocean
With nothing, just me
As I try and reach my dreams
They elude me
Luring me into freedom.

http://www.coverpimp.com/wp-content/uploads/1734-blue-sea-and-sky-clouds.jpg

Finn

To write down all I contain at this moment
I would combine all the world's mountains
To form the greatest mountain of all
With a view that no other mountain has
It would be harder to climb than Mt Everest
So high that the top is on Mars
No one could conquer it.

 Mountains wallpaper

Ngaire

To tame the storm
To pull the lightning
From the dark clouds
Sit amongst them
Build my palace
That contains my future.

To reach
To grasp the stars
To carry them
Take them into my heart
Cradle them
Never let them go.

To reach
To reach for the moon
With its soft glow
To let it elude me
It is to be shared.

http://joshandamyoettle.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/glowing-moon_oxford.jpg

Nguts

To write down all I contain at this morning
Is like a volcano building up pressure
I explode my lava flows, sweeping across the oceans.
To eliminate the weapons of war
But I have only two hands and a heart
I cannot do it on my own
But I can make a start.

Adam

Dreams falling off the branches of my mind
Are like leaves falling off trees
Getting carried by the wind
Past many pairs of eyes
Slowly dropping to the land below its mystical journey
Finally landing o the ground to rot all alone
In this world of walking warriors.

These hidden thoughts fill the skies
With dreams of rocky oceans
And mountains made of water
And deserts made of fire that exists in the furthest corners of the earth
That hold the secrets of 100 dead men.

Fritha

To write down all I contain at this moment
I would capture all the clouds
And weave them together
Into one soft blanket
To stretch across the world
To catch the people
And stop them falling through the cracks
But I only have two hands and a heart
To hold my blanket across the world
As I try to hold it up
It escapes away into my dreams.

http://static.panoramio.com/photos/large/15401910.jpg

Sophie

To write down all I contain at this moment
I would roll the trackless snow into my imagination
As it pushes me
Pushes me to my potential.

As the night comes
I climb the ball of snow
Grasp the stars
As the bright glow fills the world
With happiness.

http://www.antlerridgelodge.com/uploads/photos/lodge-winter-photo.jpg

Mia

To write down all I contain at this moment
I would pour the calmest waterfall into a glass of emptiness
The puddles in a bucket
As I grow older my goal becomes trickier.

But as days and nights pass
The waterfall becomes rough
The puddles turn into an ocean
I realise that I only have two hands and a heart
To carry the waterfall and puddles.

What can I contain of it?
It escapes my body
Leaving me behind
As a new dream begins.

 http://taiwanswaterfalls.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/imgp6859.jpg

Braeden

To write down all I contain at this moment
Smoke flowing up in the dark sky
Lava flows down the side of the volcano
The volcano explodes up in the air
To make heat for everyone
So they won't get cold
But I only have two hands and a heart.

 http://hdrwallpapers.com/walls/volcano_erupting-other.jpg

And finally Amelia's from last week that she was so proud of...

Amelia

Dark skies rumble over the village
Wind howling through the limp trees
Scarlet leaves burying feet
Smoke filling the air as snow falkes drop
I run for shelter
The bitter wind strikes me again
The smell of steak wafts into my nose
Luring me in.

A spark of light flickers
Everything goes silent
Snow eddying around me
Ice crystals form on the ground
Tossing debris into the air
Everything and everyone scatters.

Science Alive Electricity

This afternoon from 1-3 we had John from Science Alive introducing our inquiry topic of electricity.

First of all we thought about all the things we used this morning that required electricity. Imagine getting up in the dark, having a cold shower, and having no toast or hot drink for breakfast!

http://www.lidl.de/media/product/0/0/7/0/4/8/5/petra-electric-langschlitz-toaster-belluno-ta-521-35-regular.jpg

We know that power stations generate our electricity. Usually for us this is hydroelectricity, from water.

 http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/assets/images/technologies/hydropower.jpg
Ruairi was quite an expert about types of electricity!
Adam, Louis and Ruby provided energy to power a lightbulb.

Findlay was offered a job at Science Alive as he has so much wonderful knowledge!! We may lose our amazing Findlay before the end of the year!
We all then got to build electrical circuits - how exciting!!

Parallel circuit

Series circuit

Nguts and Claudia

Louie and Jake

Elizabeth and Isabella

Ruairi and Finn

Sophie and Amelia

Findlay and Adam

Louis and Kyan

Bonni and Braeden

Fritha and Ngaire

Ruby and Jaden

Emily and Maia

Allan and Jayden

Paige and Chloe

We heard words like circuit, battery, magnet, protons, electrons, neutrons, energy, power source, unbroken pathway, component, switch, series, parallel, mercury (the only metal that is a liquid at room temperature), light emitting diode (LED), insulator, conductor, light, heat, sound, movement. There is so much great scientific language to talk about, we are building our vocabulary so broadly.

R12's circuit!

It was so great to see EVERYONE in R12 fully involved in the learning this afternoon. We had our 'experts' like Findlay, Adam, Ruairi and Louie, but we also had other people who were a little unsure and reluctant at the beginning who came so far in such a short time.
Congratulations Team! And a huge thank you to John from Science Alive.
